Whilst on descent into Seattle from 17,000 feet to 10,000 feet the crew felt a thud before noticing that the

Number 1 engine gear box oil pressure light illuminate

The engine was shut down and the crew declared an emergency before landing at Seattle

On inspection it was discovered that the engine drive shaft had failed at the universal joint

This had caused substantial damage to the engine and the associated firewall
