On This Day - June 08, 1979.

The Trans-Austrlia Airlines Douglas DC-9-31 VH-TJJ 'Edmund Kennedy' was involved in an attempted armed hijack, whilst en-route from Coolangatta to Brisbane. Seaman Phillip Sillery, armed with a sawn-off shotgun entered the cockpit. He was quickly overpowered with no damage done to the aircraft.

The Qantas Airways Boeing 747-238B VH-EBA, now leased to Air Lanka as 4R-ULF, departed Sydney (Kingsford Smith) on its ferry flight to Sri Lanka as Flight UL747B.

The Airbus A300B4-203 P2-ANG, having been overhaulled and repainted at Singapore after its lease to Air Niugini, arrived at Melbourne (Tullamarine) on return to Australian Airlines. It was then reregistered as VH-TAA.

The ex Australian Airlines Boeing 727-276A VH-TBH, having been sold to the Memphis Group, departed Melbourne (Tullamarine) on its ferry flight to the United States (Greenwood / Mississippi) where it was scrapped over the next few years.

The leased Air New Zealand Boeing 767-204ER ZK-NBI 'Arawhata' was withdrawn from service at Auckland (New Zealand) after operating its final passenger service. It was then ferried to Christchurch for post-lease maintenance before its return to Britannia Airways.

The Ansett Airlines Airbus A320-211 VH-HYN 'Unity' departed Auckland (New Zealand) for Uluru (Northern Territory) as Flight AN2000, carrying the 'Olympic Flame'. It commenced its road journey around Australia from Uluru.

The Qantas Jetconnect Boeing 737-376 ZK-JNB operated its final revenue service as Flight QF2772 from Queenstown (New Zealand) to Christchurch (New Zealand). It was withdrawn from service having flown 61,633 hours with 43,176 cycles.
