On This Day - July 19, 1960.

The Trans-Australia Airlines Lockheed 188A Electra VH-TLB' John Gilbert' was involved in an attempted mid-air hijacking, whilst flying from Sydney (Kingsford Smith) to Brisbane. The hijacker, Alex Hilderbrandt, demanded to be flown to Darwin and then onto Singapore or he would explode a bomb that he claimed to be carrying. During the overpowering of the hijacker two gunshots were fired inside the aircraft's cabin. No-one was injured and the aircraft landed safely at Brisbane.

The Ansett Airlines Boeing 727-277A VH-RMX arrived at Melbourne (Tullamarine) having completed its delivery flight from the United States (Seattle, Renton). It was the last of four airframes that had been ordered by Ansett on December 09, 1970.

The Qantas Airways Boeing 737-838 VH-VYA 'Narooma' entered service operating Flight QF922 from Sydney (Kingsford Smith) to Cairns.

The Jetstar Japan Airbus A320-232 JA17JJ arrived at Brisbane on delivery to Jetstar Australia, having completed its ferry flight from Japan (Tokyo, Narita) as Flight JQ5. It was reregistered as VH-YXS before it entered service.

The Qantas Freight / Express Freighters Australia Boeing 737-376(SF) VH-XMB operated its final service, operating Flight QF7350 from Melbourne (Tullamarine) to Brisbane. The aircraft was then withdrawn from use and stored at Brisbane.
