On This Day - July 19, 1960. The Trans-Australia Airlines Lockheed 188A Electra VH-TLB' John Gilbert' was involved in an attempted mid-air hijacking, whilst flying from Sydney (Kingsford Smith) to Brisbane. The hijacker, Alex Hilderbrandt, demanded to be flown to Darwin and then onto Singapore or he would explode a bomb that he claimed to be carrying. During the overpowering of the hijacker two gunshots were fired inside the aircraft's cabin. No-one was injured and the aircraft landed safely at Brisbane. |
