Qantas Empire Airways Limited was formed as a joint venture between QANTAS and Imperial Airways of London, to operate the Empire Air Mail scheme between the United Kingdom and Australia. QEA was responsible for operating the Singapore to Brisbane sector of the route.

The Trans-Austrlia Airlines Douglas DC-9-31 VH-TJJ 'Hamilton Hume' operated its last revenue service as Flight TN455 from Brisbane to Melbourne (Tullamarine). It was withdrawn from use and prepared for its return to Australian Aircraft Sales, having flown 48,683 hours with 52,174 cycles.

The Qantas Airways Boeing 747-438 VH-OJK 'Newcastle' departed Sydney (Kingsford Smith) on its ferry flight to the United States (Victorville, California) as Flight QF6019 for storage and eventual sale. On engine shut-down the aircraft had flown 83,760 hours with 10,876 cycles.
