The Australian National Airways Douglas DC-4-1009 NC10202 arrived at Melbourne (Essendon) having completed its delivery flight from the United States (San Francisco, California). It was reregistered as VH-ANF and named 'Loongana' before it entered service later that month.

The Qantas Empire Airways Douglas C-47A-20-DK VH-EAL was deployed on a 'search-and-rescue' mission to locate a missing Department of Civil Aviation de Havilland DHA-3 Drover. The missing crew were located in a life raft some 100 miles south-west of Manus Island.
