The Australian National Airways Douglas DC-3-232A VH-ACB 'Warana' was test-flown at Melbourne (Essendon) following its re-assembled, after arriving as deck-cargo aboard the S.S. Tolken at the beginning of the month.

The Antilles Air Boats Short S-25 Sandringham Mk 4 Flying Boat N158C 'Southern Cross' departed Sydney (Rose Bay) on its ferry flight to the Virgin Islands, and its new home. This was the ex Ansett Flying Boat Services' aircraft VH-BRC 'Beachcomber'.

The Air New Zealand Douglas DC-10-30 ZK-NZP was destroyed when it crashed into the side of Mount Erebus, Antarctica, whilst engaged in a sight-seeing flight over the frozen wilderness. All 257 people on board were killed.
